One of the Safest Browsers for the Clearnet
Ordinary browsers favour speed and convenience. A website can normally see the public IP address assigned to your connection. Private or incognito mode does not alter that; it mainly avoids retaining local history and cookies after the session.
Tor Browser makes it harder for a website to connect your activity with your usual IP address. It can be useful, but it is not the best browser for every situation.
What changes when you browse through Tor?
Instead of connecting directly, Tor builds a route through three servers, called relays, run by different volunteers and organisations.
The entry relay receives your connection but cannot read its final destination. The exit relay reaches the website without receiving your home IP address. A middle relay separates those two ends. The site therefore records the exit relay’s address rather than the one supplied by your internet provider.
This arrangement is intended to prevent any one relay from having the complete picture. Your browser knows the route because it created it, but the full circuit is not disclosed to the destination website.
Privacy comes with practical trade-offs
The longer route makes Tor slower. Video can suffer and some sites repeatedly present CAPTCHAs. Banking, shopping and streaming services may also reject Tor because many unrelated users share publicly known exit addresses.
Tor lacks the convenient country selector found in many VPN apps. If a service requires a British IP address, a VPN is generally more practical.
Tor, a VPN and incognito mode are not interchangeable
A VPN places one company between you and the internet. It can cover numerous apps and is normally faster, but its provider occupies a position of trust. Tor divides that role among independent relays and primarily protects activity inside Tor Browser.
Incognito mode offers neither approach. It can conceal a browsing session from another person using the same device, but websites and the internet provider can still see the normal network connection.
You do not need to visit the dark web
Tor is associated with hidden .onion services, yet it opens familiar .com and .co.uk pages too. It can be used to read news, research a sensitive subject or reach blocked information. Ordinary sites do not become part of the dark web simply because they are visited through Tor.

Understand what Tor cannot do
Tor cannot protect an infected computer from spyware, and it cannot stop you identifying yourself. Signing into a personal account, entering an email address or revealing recognisable details may connect the session to you regardless of which IP address the site sees. Programs outside Tor Browser are not automatically routed through the Tor network either.
Torrenting is especially unsuitable. Torrent software may expose identifying information, while high-volume transfers consume capacity provided by volunteer relay operators.
Anyone trying Tor should obtain it from the official Tor Project download page, install security updates and avoid adding extensions that make the browser more distinctive.
For routine shopping, streaming and account-based services, a normal browser or reputable VPN will usually be easier. When the specific goal is preventing websites from seeing your regular IP address without entrusting the entire route to one VPN company, Tor Browser offers a valuable alternative—as long as its limitations are understood.
